The COVID-19 pandemic continues to hurt small businesses and employees in Montana.
While the State and its residents are practicing safety measures in line with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, the effects on day-to-day life are becoming harder to live with. Businesses are closing their doors, and many employers aren't able to pay out their staff during this pandemic.
According to Montana Works, a state workforce development and unemployment insurance service, temporary emergency rules have been adopted to streamline unemployment benefits related to COVID-19.
This means that effective March 17th, workers who have been told by their employers to stay home due to COVID-19 could claim that they have been laid off and therefore apply for unemployment benefits. Additionally, workers will be able to immediately apply for unemployment benefits, and the state will waive the typical one-week waiting period before benefits kick in.
The Small Business Administration is stepping in to help small business owners with access to long-term low-interest loans. These loans are intended to cover additional costs incurred from having to close the doors. They are not intended to replace lost profits.
The temporary emergency rules will remain in effect as long as the governor continues to declare a state of emergency.
