A new U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis report emphasized the importance of outdoor recreation to Montana’s economy and how it has grown to be that way within the last five years.
Between 2012 and 2017, Montana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 6 percent, according to the report. During the same period, the contribution from outdoor recreation to the state’s GDP grew by 24 percent.
Montana ranks second in the country for how much outdoor recreation contributes to its gross domestic product at 5.1 percent in 2017, according to the report. Hawaii ranks first with 5.4 percent.
In 2017, outdoor recreation added $427 billion to the nation’s GDP, according to the report. In Montana, outdoor recreation added $2.4 billion to the state’s GDP.
